Soft tissue cancer – Lauren’s story of becoming an amputee

University student, Lauren (aged 22), was diagnosed with a soft tissue cancer called epithelioid sarcoma which lead to a thumb amputation.

Being right handed, she was concerned that surgery would have an impact on her dexterity and ability to play piano. The subsequent surgery and rehabilitation Lauren received ensured she was able to use her hand again but Lauren does discuss her fear of recurrence and the sense of isolation she felt from her peers on the Cancer Council website.
